Oderberg City

History, nature and culture on the Oder River

The town of Oderberg is located on the eastern edge of the Eberswalde glacial valley, between the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and the Lower Oder Valley National Park.

The Old Oder flows right through the town, while the Oder itself forms the border with Poland just a few kilometres away.

The town looks back on an eventful history: the first traces of settlement date back to the Stone Age, and in the Middle Ages Oderberg experienced a heyday thanks to its location at the Oder crossing and on important trade routes.

Numerous historical sites still bear witness to this today – such as the 14th-century fortress ruins known as the ‘Bärenkasten’ (bear cage) or the Marowski House from 1680, the oldest town house in the region.

The neo-Gothic St. Nicholas Church from 1855, the fortified church in the Neuendorf district and the

‘Großer Stein’ (Big Stone), a mighty boulder from the Ice Age, are also among the cultural highlights. Nature lovers will find idyllic forests, seven marked circular hiking trails and attractive cycling routes around the Albrechtsberg.

A visit to the Inland Waterways Museum with its open-air exhibition and the historic side-wheel steamer RIESA is a special experience.

Modern QR codes at the sights also invite you to explore the city digitally on your own.

Oderberg uniquely combines history, culture and nature – and invites visitors to discover the region

on the Oder River.

The forests around Albrechtsberg are ideal for hiking and relaxing. There are seven circular hiking trails around Oderberg.

The starting point for each is the market square with the former town hall.

An overview map is available from the tourist information office.

Numerous cycling and hiking maps and flyers for the region are also available here.
