Inlands waterways transport

The history of shipping on the Oder

The core expertise of the museum lies in the inland navigation of the Oder region. Thanks to the great passion for collecting of the former museum directors, the museum today possesses an extensive archive of historical documents, photographs, ship models and numerous original exhibits relating to the history of navigation on the Oder River.

Our aim is not only to present the technical development of inland navigation, but also to give visitors an insight into the everyday life of the people who lived and worked on the ships. Detailed ship models and historical equipment provide an authentic impression of life on the Oder.

A special exhibition area is dedicated to inland shipping families, for whom the ship was both workplace and home. Visitors can see an originally furnished cabin with sleeping quarters, a historic ship’s kitchen and typical household items — even a children’s rocker was part of everyday life on board. The exhibition vividly illustrates the conditions under which families lived and worked on the ships for many years.
